Goree Island (June17)

Goree Island is the important site for the Atlantic slave trade since it used to be a port where Senegalese were sent to Europe and to the states as slaves. We visited the House of Slaves where slaves were held until the boat gets to the port to pick them up. In the house, the slaves were kept downstairs while the people in charge lived right above in the upstairs. The people were seperated by their age and sex and locked in the small room with no lights and no windows. Our group went into one of the room and we couldn't even stay inside for a minute since it was too small and too hot for 21 of us, but they used to keep more people in the room in the past. What made me really sad was the two different views of Atlantic Ocean from upstairs and downstairs. For those who lived upstairs, the view from the balcony must have been a spectacular with all the luxury they could have enjoyed. However, for the slaves who were getting on the boat to be sent away from their own homeland, it must have been a pain worse than we can even imagine.

the small door where the light is coming used to be the passageway for slaves to get onto the boat to be shipped away.

Even the babies were separated from their mothers and locked in the room
